You Gotta Come See for Yourself

John 4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?


               A. The Conversation

She couldn’t believe that he would stop and talk to her. – vs. 9

The disciples couldn’t believe that he would stop and talk to her. – vs. 27

I’m thankful for the day that Jesus stopped by to talk to me!

I’m glad he didn’t let me and who I was keep him from confronting me and initiating a conversation!

               B. The Confusion

                              1. She confessed her awareness of Christ – vs. 25

                              2. She confessed her acceptance of Christ – vs. 29


I. His Perception

Her first testimony of Jesus Christ was – “Come see a man, which told me all things that ever I did.”

Everybody has secrets.

Everybody has thought things, done things, said things – that nobody knows about.

There’s a lot of people that feel a sense of security and self-confidence about their secret life.

But there is one that knows.

He sees everything.

  • 1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts:
  • Psalms 139:2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

               A. She was Immoral – vs. 17, 18

He perceived what she was doing.

               B. She was Ignorant – vs. 22 “Ye worship ye know not what…”

He perceived what she was thinking.

               C. She was an Imposter – vs. 23 “…when the true worshippers…”

He perceived what she thought she was doing.

No wonder she ran into the city crying – “Come see a man, which told me all things that ever I did.”


II. His Passion

Jesus said, “I must needs go through Samaria.”

Jesus had needs.

This woman had surrounded herself with men her whole life who had needs.

But she had never met a man that had THIS need.

Jesus told his disciples “I have meet to eat that ye know not of.”

She’d met men with appetites that were carnal and fleshly.

Her whole world had been wrapped up with men that had wicked and ungodly appetites.

But she’d never met a man that was consumed with an appetite for saving souls.

She’d never met a man that instead of wanting something from her, was offering to give her something.

Verse 28 says she went into the city and said to the MEN – Come see a man.

His love for her was unlike anything she’d ever experienced.

His love and concern for her was real; it was selfless; it was refreshing.


III. His Power

               A. To Forgive

  • Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
  • John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

I Corinthians 6

  • 9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
  • 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
  • 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

               B. To Forget

  • Micah 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
  • Psalms 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
  • Isaiah 43:25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.

               C. To Fulfill – vs. 14

  • John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
  • John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
