You Can’t Show It Until You Know It

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Intro: Every child of God should strive to be an example.

There are too many Bible verses to mention tonight that a Christian should be an example.

  • Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

I. The Seriousness of an Example – vs. 11, 12

EXAMPLE: the mark of a stroke or blow, print; a figure formed by a blow or impression

                A. Involves Doctrine – command

  • (Young Men) Titus 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
  • SEE verse 1 – sound doctrine

                B. Involves Direction – teach!

  •  (Servants) Titus 2:10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
  • (Everyone) Titus 3:2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

                C. Involves Demonstration – be thou an example!

But in our text, Paul is urging Timothy to “be an example of the believers.

Not TO the believers, but OF the believers.

The world is searching for someone that is REAL!

They are looking to see if we have what we are trying to sell them!

II. The Scrutiny of an Example – vs. 12b

                A. Be Thou an Example In Word – You Can’t Show It Until You Know It!

  • Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

                B. Be Thou an Example In Conversation

CONVERSATION: conduct; behavior;

I Peter 2

  • 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
  • 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
  • 11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
  • 12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

                C. Be Thou an Example In Charity – You Can’t Show It Until You Know It!

  • 1 John 3:18  My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

                D. Be Thou an Example In SpiritYou Can’t Show It Until You Know It!

SPIRIT – this is our attitude; our demeanor

  • Daniel 6:3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

We can’t reprimand our kids for having a bad attitude if we have one!

We can’t discipline our children for having a bad spirit if we are not demonstrating a right spirit!

                E. Be Thou an Example In Faith

You can’t show people what it means to WALK BY FAITH until you have learned to WALK BY FAITH!

  • James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

                F. Be Thou an Example In PurityYou Can’t Show It Until You Know It!

We can’t preach purity to our children if we are playing around with sin!

We can’t show it until we know it!

  • Ezekiel 22:26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

Do you know the difference between the holy and the profane?

How serious are you about the scrutiny?

To what extent are you willing to prepare yourself for the task of BEING AN EXAMPLE OF THE BELIEVER??

Notice Paul’s advice to Timothy about how to rise to the occasion.

III. The Sustaining of an Example – vs. 13-16

  • vs. 13give attendance to reading, exhortation, doctrine
  • vs. 14Neglect not the gift that is in thee…
  • vs. 15Meditate upon these things…
  • vs. 15give thyself wholly unto them – (not half-hearted)
  • vs. 16take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine…
  • vs. 16continue in them (keep on – don’t stop!) Resist the urge to relax; take a break; etc.
