Why People Will Not Come To Jesus – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

Why People Will Not Come to Jesus

John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Intro:  In our text, we can conclude several very important facts.

  • John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

A. The Unmistakable Will

The problem with people not coming to God is not because God is not willing.

He’s clearly willing.

  • 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
  • 1 Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

B. The Undeniable Welcome

  • John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

The welcome has already been extended.

There is nothing stopping a sinner from coming to Christ.

He’s already done everything that needs to be done to make it possible.

  • Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
  • Isaiah 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

C. The Unparalleled Wealth

  • John 5:40 “…that ye might have life!”

Jesus is not offering you a facelift.

He’s not offering you an upgrade or a makeover.

He’s not offering to help you repair your reputation or improve your situation.

He’s not offering temporary relief from the consequences of your actions.

He’s offering you eternal life.

He’s offering you forgiveness of sins.

He’s offering you a home in Heaven.

He’s offering to make you a blood-bought child of God.

So why won’t people come to Jesus?

Why aren’t they packed in here this morning?

Why isn’t our voicemail full of people wanting to get saved?

Why aren’t they lined out the door?

If we were offering the latest iPhone, they’d be spending the night in the parking lot.

They’d be camped out in the soccer field to get in here the minute we unlocked the doors.

So why won’t people come to Jesus and get the free gift of eternal life?

Why are the sinners not running into the loving and merciful arms of the Lord Jesus Christ this morning?

I. The Truth is not a Priority

This has always been a characteristic of wicked men.

Jeremiah 9

  • 2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
  • 3 And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.

Our society is far more concerned with their feelings, emotions and their own desires than they are the truth.

Paul actually tells us that the wicked will take the truth of God and turn it into a lie.

Romans 1

  • 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
  • 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

John 3

  • 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
  • 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
  • 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

               A. Truth is Repulsive – “…love darkness rather than light… For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light

               B. Truth is Revealing – “…deeds be reproved…”

Isaiah 30

  • 9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:
  • 10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

Jesus said this in John 8:

  • 40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
  • 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
  • 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
  • 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
  • 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
  • 47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

Millions will be left behind after the rapture and be deceived by the Antichrist because they did not love the truth.

2 Thessalonians 2

  • 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
  • 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

II. The Teachings are not Popular

John 6

  • 60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
  • 61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

Acts 7:57 – When Stephen was preaching, they stopped their ears.

2 Timothy 4:3 – …time will come when they cannot endure sound doctrine…”

III. The Turning is too Painful

John the Baptist said this about Jesus:

  • John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Jesus came to fix the sin problem.

  • Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

You don’t have to stop sinning to be saved; but you have to want to.

As long as you are holding onto your sinful life, you can’t be saved.

Jesus told the woman caught in adultery, “Go and sin no more.” – (John 8:11)

She didn’t say, “Hang on here a minute. I want to keep sinning.”

  • Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
  • Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
  • Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
  • Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
  • Luke 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
  • Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • Acts 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

IV. The Time is just not Pressing

  • Matthew 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
  • Matthew 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
  • Luke 12:40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Jesus gave a parable about this mindset.

Luke 12

  • 16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
  • 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
  • 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
  • 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
  • 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

Conclusion: John 1

  • 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
  • 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
  • 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
