What It Means to Surrender

Acts 9:51

Intro: Every great Bible character had one thing in common – they surrendered to God.

Some resisted at first, but they finally surrendered.

Surrender: to yield (something) to the possession or power of another; deliver up possession of on demand or under duress: to give oneself up, as into the power of another; submit or yield.

I. A Recognition of His Preeminence

  • Illustration: When two armies are fighting, and one overpowers the other, the weaker one will surrender.

Many people see God as an old man sitting in a rocking chair in Heaven.

They think of Jesus and they see a baby in a manger or a Messiah that was rejected and crucified to die on a cross.

But many Christians fail to recognize who God is.

He is Lord. He is Master. He is the Creator of the universe.

Story of a man that raised his fist at God and told him to come fight like a man. While cursing and screaming at God, a gnat flew into his mouth and he began to choke and died.

A person that is not surrendered to God is fighting God.

  • Illustration: Jonah ran away from God in chapter 1. But he surrendered to obey God in chapter 2.

A person that will not surrender to God has failed to realize just how futile it is to fight him.

God made us. He is all powerful. To live a life of God fighting against God is to live a life of defeat and misery.

Romans 9

  • 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
  • 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

II. A Realization of His Purchase

1 Corinthians 6

  • 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
  • 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

When you buy something, it’s yours.

III. A Resignation to His Purpose

  • 2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Illustration: Saul on the road to Damascus.

  • Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord [said] unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

God revealed later on in the chapter that He had a plan and a purpose for Saul.

  • 15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

To surrender to God means you are willing to accept His purpose for your life.
