Watch Where You’re Going – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

Watch Where You’re Going

(Alternate title) Ponder Before You Wander

Proverbs 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Intro: Texting and driving is a serious problem. If you’re going to text and drive, at least have enough sense not to hold your phone in your lap!

I say this to drivers everywhere every time I get behind the wheel! Watch Where You’re Going!

And I say it with passion! And conviction! As if my very life depended on it!

PONDER: to weigh, make level, balance; to weigh out; to make level or smooth

ALL THY WAYS: way, road, distance, journey, manner, road, way, path, journey, direction, manner, habit, way, of course of life

ESTABLISHED: to be firmly established, to be established, be stable, be secure, be enduring, to be fixed, be securely determined

The path you’re on will eventually become your life’s road.

When was the last time you looked where you’re going?

When was the last time you pulled off on the shoulder of the road, got out and looked around.

Where are you?

How did you get there?

Are you happy with the path you’re on?

I. Your Flesh

  • Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

The minute you start in the direction of satisfying and feeding the flesh, that path leads to hurt and pain.

  • Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

PLACE: ground; place, any portion or space marked off, as it were from surrounding space

Look at the text in Proverbs 4:

  • 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
  • 24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
  • 25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
  • 26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
  • 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
  • Psalms 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

II. Your Friends

  • Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

Proverbs 1

  • 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
  • 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
  • 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
  • 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
  • 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
  • 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
  • Proverbs 4:14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
  • Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

ILLUSTRATION: 2 Samuel 13:3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.

Spiritual people do not enjoy fellowshipping with carnal people.

You cannot be a friend of the world and the friend of God at the same time.

  • James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

III. Your Finances

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you can’t spend your way out of poverty.

And you can’t sleep your way out of it either!

If I was broke, I’d work 18 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I’d work and not stop until I got out that hole I was in.

You can make money 100 different ways.

If you don’t honor God with your money, you are paddling upstream.

God won’t bless a God-robber.

God won’t bless a person that wastes money.

  • Proverbs 18:9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

Cut back. Save money. Work together. Read books on finances. Study financial experts.

Stop blowing money on nonsense. Watch Where You’re Going!!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Are you a good man?

  • Proverbs 13:22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children:

That’s Old Testament: Here’s a verse from the New Testament:

  • 2 Corinthians 12:14 Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

The Bible does not contradict itself.

Luke 12 tells about the rich man that built bigger barns. Jesus said:

  • 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

You can put God first and honor Him with the firstfruits of all thine increase.

  • Tithing won’t put you in the poorhouse.
  • Not tithing will.
  • Credit card debt will.
  • Borrowing money to buy everything you want will.

IV. Your Family

Psalm 128

  • 1 Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.
  • 2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
  • 3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
  • 4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

Your marriage is not a self-driving car. Watch Where You’re Going!

Your children will not automatically grow up to serve God.

Dad, you will not just automatically become the spiritual leader.

Mom, you will not just automatically be a submissive, supportive and spiritual wife.

Kids, you will not just automatically be obedient, respectful, responsible and honor your parents.

Everybody in the house needs Watch Where You’re Going!

  • What kind of family do you want?
  • What kind of homelife do you want?
  • What kind of marriage do you want?
  • Watch Where You’re Going!

You can’t lie to each other; deceive each other; betray each other and have a good home!

Watch Where You’re Going! With that temper, Sir!

Watch Where You’re Going! With that moodiness and grumpiness!

  • Mark 3:27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
  • Luke 11:21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:

  • Proverbs 14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

  • Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
