Turning the Tide in America – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

Turning the Tide in America

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

I. The Rise of America – “Righteousness exalteth a nation…”

The way this country was founded is a testimony to the truth in this verse.

America became the most powerful and influential nation in the world because of its founding.

The Pilgrims and the Puritans came over in search of religious freedom.

South America was settled by people searching for GOLD; North America by people searching for GOD.

The First Charter of Virginia – third paragraph makes this clear:

We greatly commending, and graciously accepting of, their desires for the furtherance of so noble a work, which may, by the providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the glory of his divine Majesty, in propagating of Christian religion to such people, as yet live in darkness and miserable ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God, and may in time bring the infidels and savages, living in those parts, to human civility, and to a settled and quiet government;

II. The Reproach of America – “…but sin is a reproach to any people.”

               A. Lack of Competent Leadership

Proverbs 29:2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

  • In the White House – when the man acting as president has cue cards telling him what to do
  • In the Court House – Supreme Court Justice that doesn’t know what a woman is
  • In the State House – the corruption, deceit, lawlessness in Congress is astounding

The Department of Defense is set to fire 40,000 National Guards troops for not being vaccinated.

We’ve lost 13% of our fighting force over refusing a vaccine for a virus with a 99.8% survival rate.

The Chinese are defeating us without firing a shot and nobody’s talking about it.

  • In the Church House – pastors that have no idea what an overseer is called to do – Acts 20:28
  • In our House – moms and dads with no respect, no rules, no relationship with their kids

               B. Loss of Constitutional Liberties

Sixty years ago, on June 25, 1962, the U.S. Supreme Court declared school-sponsored prayers unconstitutional in the landmark case Engel v. Vitale.

Coaches being fired for praying on the football field after games.

Churches being fined for having services.

Conservatives being censored and banned.

The powers that be give weapons to the cartel and to the citizens of Ukraine while trying to ban ours.

               C. Lapse of Christian Living

Churches are closing in America faster than new ones are being started.

In the 1950’s, half of Americans attended church regularly.

In March 2022, the share of Americans who attended religious services in person in the previous month was 27%.

Divorce rates are at an all-time high.

Suicide has on average, there are 130 suicides per day.

Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the US. – one every 11 minutes.

Drug overdoses exceeded 100,000 last year for the first time.

140,557 Americans die from the effects of alcohol in an average year.

1-in-10 Americans over the age of 12 have Alcohol Use Disorder.’

We have legalized marijuana in half of this country.

States are currently seeking to legalize prostitution.

Profanity on TV is up 69%.

America – the shining light on the hill; the beacon of hope for the world has become a reproach.

III. The Restoring of America

               A. A Return to the Savior – There is a remedy, and his name is Jesus Christ

As long as Jesus Christ is nothing more than a swear word in America, there is no hope for revival.

Isaiah 55

  • 6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
  • 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Matthew 11

  • 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
  • 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
  • 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
  • Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Sin is the problem, and Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the answer.

There Is A Remedy lyrics

Verse 1 For the world that’s lost in darkness, For the saint who’s gone astray, For the sinner, blind but searching, For the child in need of faith, For the homeless and forsaken, For the hungry and the cold, For the prisoner and the captive, For the young and for the old…

There is a remedy, For every sin-sick soul, There is a cure for all, All the pain and hurt and wrong, There is a solution, For all the problems deep inside, There is a remedy, And His name is Jesus Christ.

Verse 2 For the bitter, for the lonely, For the weary and afraid, For the burdened and frustrated, The discouraged and dismayed, For the mocked and persecuted, For the battered, for the wronged, For the scarred and for the wounded, For the weak and for the strong.

Verse 3
For every tribe and every nation, For every color, every race, For every tongue and every language, For every time and every place, There’s an answer to the questions, There is love for all the hate, There’s a healer for the dying, He’s the Light, the Truth, the Way.

               B. A Revival of the Saints

  • 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Our text is clear – Proverbs 14:34Righteousness exalteth a nation…”

There has to be a revival of righteousness, holiness and godliness among believers!

If we are going to see a change of direction in this country, we must see a change in God’s people.

Today, pastors that spend more time in the tattoo parlor and beauty parlors then they do in their prayer closet.

We have church members that spend more hours in a week at the game than in God’s house.

We have parents that won’t restrain their children.

Young people sit at the feet of Hollywood way more than they do at the feet of Jesus.

Men spend more time with their gaming than they do with God.

We have husbands and wives that won’t honor their marriage vows.

We have more divorces taking place in our churches than weddings.

You’ve got to stop making excuses for your adultery, your porn addiction, your drinking, your cussing.

We have Christians acting like, looking like, talking like, dressing like the very people we’re supposed to be reaching.

As long as God’s people are asleep, complacent, full of carnality, sin and apathy, this nation has no hope!

               C. A Reaching of the Sinners – turn the tide

Changing America starts with seeing Americans saved one at the time.

That decision starts when each individual that makes up this country makes that choice for themselves.

When we talk about the country making a decision, that is not going to be a collective choice.

We will not see this choice on any ballot.

You get to vote for this choice when you make a personal decision to follow Jesus Christ.

The only way to save America is to save Americans.

  • We don’t need a new political party.
  • We don’t need a new political candidate.
  • We don’t need new lobbyists or activists.
  • We need new Christians storming the gates of hell with prayer and commitment to Jesus Christ!

Conclusion: Our country is at a crossroads. We can either choose righteousness, or we can choose sin.

We can choose to follow the path of God’s Word, or we can choose to continue on the path to destruction.

It starts with just one individual. Just one family. Just one church. Making the choice to turn the tide.

Turn the Tide

Lyrics by Abigail Miller

Verse 1

When America was founded, she was strong and pure and good,
And her leaders on their knees were not ashamed to call on God.
But our nation, in her pride, has turned her back upon the right,
And the clouds of evil threaten to turn glory into night.
Strong wickedness has crept in like a cold and bloody thief,
Those who know the Lord and do His word stand by in disbelief.
For the love of God and country, we must not cease for a day,
For the future of our children we must lift our hearts and pray…

Turn the tide, Lord, turn the tide, Open wide the floodgates of Your power.
Stem the flood of wickedness; Restore, revive, and bless. Turn the tide.

Verse 2

God’s enemy is hard at work, undermining everywhere,
Breaking down foundations, twisting laws, and setting snares.
He would take away our freedom and replace it with despair,
And he laughs at those opposing him as if they were not there.
But God’s children cannot sit by, we must stand up and defend,
For the battle is not over ’til our King declares the end.

Verse 3

We must work and fight and meet him, not as those that beat the air,
For the greatest weapon in our hands is strong and fervent prayer.

Though the waves of immorality may beat upon the shore,
And it seems that all ungodliness is knocking at our door,
We must never give up hope, we must not let them win the war,
We must plead with Him who has the pow’r to cleanse and to restore.
