Together Sermon Series

Part I – The Power

Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

Introduction: The word TOGETHER is found 469 times in the Bible; both in the Old and New Testament.

Unity and working together is not overrated; it is underestimated.

Individuality is fine as long as you’re not part of a body or just one part in a bigger picture.

I. A Picture that is Unexpected

Turn to Genesis 11 this morning and we will make an application from these verses.

In the New Testament, the Bible is clear – the early church was TOGETHER.

That is made perfectly clear in:

  • Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

It is also repeated in:

  • Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

We will eventually get back to the New Testament church and the power of TOGETHER.

This morning, we are going to look at an Old Testament passage.

When you want to get a definition of something, get God’s definition.

God makes a statement in Genesis 11 that clearly explains the power of being TOGETHER.

This group of people in Genesis 11 were also together and had all things common.

This group can easily be a type and a picture of the church.

Here was a group of unbelievers but they had some characteristics that you wouldn’t expect to find here.

A. Their Common Descent – 10:32

They were brethren; they were family.

They were the fruit of a family that had been saved.

  • Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

They all were a testimony of God’s plan of salvation. (It’s just a type; they weren’t all saved obviously.)

The church may not have much in common in a lot of earthly or physical ways, but we all have one major commonality.

We have been saved the grace of God.

We are part of the same family.

We have the same Father and we are all brothers and sisters.

B. Their Common Dialect – vs. 1 “And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.”

They had one language; they had one speech.

The church needs to speak the same thing.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

God’s people have a different way of talking than the devil’s crowd!

  • Proverbs 10:11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
  • Proverbs 10:32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

A Christian has a distinct speech.

  • Proverbs 10:20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver:

Peter’s speech betrayed him.

The world should be able to identify us by our language; our speech; the way that we communicate.

C. Their Common Direction – vs. 2 – “…as they journeyed from the east…”

They were unified in their direction.

They all started out in the same place and were headed to the same place.

D. Their Common Dwelling – they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there

This speaks of a lifestyle; a manner of life; a way of living; a continuation of activity

  • Psalms 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

E. Their Common Desire – vs. 4 “…let us build…”

They had a desire to build.

Every believer should have a desire to contribute to what God is doing; and do their part.

Jesus said, “Upon this rock I will build my church…” Matthew 16:18

Paul said, “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” – 1 Corinthians 3:10

God is building the church. But He is using His people to do it.

  • Psalms 127:1Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it…”

NOTE: This was not an honorable and noble building project. It was wicked.

God shut this operation down because it was an unbiblical and ungodly desire.

They wanted to make a name for themselves.

They wanted to get to heaven by their own works.

God put an end to it.

How did God do it?

He scattered them. This was His goal.

How did He do that? By confounding their language. That was His method.

What I want to focus on this morning is the POWER of TOGETHER.

Notice the second point of this message.

II. A People that is Unified

We cannot underestimate the importance of this statement. “…the people is one…”

Notice the grammar. It didn’t say the people ARE one. That would make the people plural.

They were so unified that God referred to the people in the singular sense.

This is a pastor’s dream. This was Paul’s desire.

  • Ephesians 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith…

This should be every believer’s dream.

This was Jesus’ prayer in John 17.

John 17

  • 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
  • 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
  • 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
  • 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

III. A Potential that is Unrestrained

We cannot comprehend the power and potential of a group of people that are one.

  • Together in their FAITH.
  • Together in their FOCUS.
  • Together in their FERVENCY.
  • Together in their FAITHFULNESS.
  • Together in their FURTHERANCE.

God Himself said, “…nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” The world is yet to see what God can do with a church where THE PEOPLE IS ONE.
