Throwing Your Life Away

Mark 9:22

Intro: This boy was demon possessed. No question about it. The Bible says he was possessed by a foul spirit. The Bible says in verse 22 that this foul spirit – these demons often cast this boy into the fire and into the waters to destroy him.

The devil was literally trying to throw this boy’s life away.

NEWSFLASH: The devil wants you to throw your life away.

I want to notice several things that happened in this story that are exactly what happens in the life of a young person (or an adult!) when they are “Throwing Their Life Away”.

I. Inability to Communicate

  • 17 says he hath a dumb spirit
  • 25 says “Thou dumb… spirit…”

This boy was unable to speak.

The devil knows that if he can get you to stay quiet, he has a better chance of throwing your life away.

This means:

A. He couldn’t communicate when it came to Answers

Nowhere do you see him asking questions.

Nowhere do you see him asking questions about what was going on in his life.

He just lived every day, struggling, but never got any answers.

B. He couldn’t communicate when it came to Advice

Not once did he seek advice or counsel on how to fix his problem.

Not once did he ever communicate how he felt about his life and his struggles.

He just kept it bottled up inside.

That is what the Devil wants you to do.

He wants you to throw your life away.

People that do not seek counsel and advice self-destruct from the inside out.

  • Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

C. He couldn’t communicate when it came to Abuse

He was being attacked. But he said nothing.

He was being hurt. But he said nothing.

He was being abused by someone else. But he said nothing.

Someone else was doing things to him that he didn’t want, but he said nothing.

I talk to people every day that are being destroyed by abuse that they never told anyone about.

If you are being abuse, or have been abused, you need to tell someone.

To keep that bottled up inside you could be the devil’s way of throwing your life away.

Millions of dollars are spent each year for adults to go sit down with a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a therapist and help people talk about things they should have talked about years go!

Millions of people are on drugs; they are addicted to alcohol because they bottled up their feelings, their emotions, their thoughts and never communicated to those that loved them and could help them.

Marriages end in divorce because husbands and wives don’t communicate!

People get mad and leave churches because they never sit down with their pastor and talk.

Kids run away from home and destroy their lived because they do not ever talk to their parents.

Now, they are just trying to cope after throwing their life away!

Satan wants to destroy you by keeping you from being able to communicate.

It’s OK to ask for help.

It’s OK to go to someone you love and respect and tell them what’s going on.

II. Incapable of Choices

One of the first thing we see about this boy was that he had no ability to do anything on his own.

Everything that happened to him was the choice of this foul spirit.

  • 18 And wheresoever he taketh him… The boy had no choice but to go along with the devil’s wishes.
  • It was the foul spirit that took him places.
  • It was the foul spirit that teareth him. – vs. 18, 20
  • It was the foul spirit that cast him into the fire. – vs. 22

God created man with a choice.

That is what makes us different from the animals.

It is called The Volition of Man.

We have the ability to exercise our free will.

Satan desires to bind people up in bondage; chains; make them slaves.

God wants you to be free.

Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

  • John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

So many today are incapable of making choices.

They are like programmed zombies.

  • 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

III. Immune to Correction

Another characteristic of a person that is literally throwing their life away is they are immune to any correction from anybody.

Notice: vs. 25Thou dumb AND DEAF SPIRIT.

Not only was this boy unable to speak, but he was unable to hear.

A. He couldn’t hear his parents.

His dad had been dealing with him from the time he was a little child.

No doubt he had done everything he could to help him, but the boy was immune to correction.

B. He couldn’t hear the disciples.

The disciples were followers of Jesus Christ.

They should have been able to help this boy. – vs. 18 …they could not…

In fact, they were surprised when they couldn’t. – vs. 28 Why could not we cast him out…”

One of Satan’s number one strategies to get you to throw your life away is to keep you from being able to respond to correction, to reproof, to instruction, to the leadership in your life.

  • Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
