The Riches of the Righteous Part 2 – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

The Riches of the Righteous

Part 2

The Riches of His Word

Proverbs 15:6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

Intro: Our text verse is Proverbs 15:6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

There is a host of riches that are available to the child of God.

We will look at these over the next few weeks.

But tonight, it is fitting that we kick of this inventory of God’s riches for the righteous with one of my favorites.

One of the greatest treasures of the righteous is Riches of His Word.

  • Psalms 119:14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
  • Psalms 119:72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
  • Psalms 119:127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.
  • Psalm 119:162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

I preach about the Scripture a lot: I know that.

But today, it is getting harder and harder to find churches and believers that are not trying to change God’s Word!

It is also difficult to find Christians with the proper respect and appreciation for the Word of God.

What a shame to neglect and not value one of the most valuable resources for the believer!

More verses that emphasize the value of God’s Word:

Psalm 19

  • 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
  • 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
  • 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
  • 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Proverbs 3

  • 13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
  • 14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
  • 15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
  • 16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

Proverbs 8

  • 18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
  • 19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
  • Proverbs 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

The Word of God is one of the greatest riches that a child of God has – for many reasons.

We will look at just a few tonight.

The Word of God is one of the most valuable, priceless resources for the child of God:

I. Because of the Authorship

As an author myself, I have an idea of the importance of creating a book.

I have had a deep love for books since I was a child.

I would find a quiet corner and bury myself in a book for hours.
I always dreamed of writing my own books.

When I read a book, I would not only read the book, but try to imagine being the author of that book.

I’d put myself in their place and imagine where they were typing out their manuscript.

I’d think of the research and time that went into making that book in my hands a reality.

I would think about how neat it was to be able to read someone else’s thoughts.

I realized that writing down your thoughts made their thoughts, my thoughts.

Their imagination triggered my imagination.

Their research and learning once in a book were now available for my research and my learning.

I appreciated their time and effort to write a book for my enjoyment, my learning and to influence me.

I do the Bible the exact same way.

I picture the author of the Bible. Which is God.

But God didn’t take a pen and paper and write the Bible.

He communicated His Word to man through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

  • 2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.

From these verses we conclude that the Scriptures are unique in that they are:

               A. The Product of Holy Men – holy men of God spake…

               B. The Prompting of the Holy Ghost – as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

INSPIRATION – Gr: theopneustos – God-breathed

We believe in what is called “confluent inspiration.”

Meaning, the Bible is a product of two separate entities: human and divine.

Examples of man’s words actually being God’s words:

Acts 4

  • 24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
  • 25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
  • Isaiah 8:1 Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen…
  • Isaiah 30:8 Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:

ILLUSTRATION: I could write a sentence with this pen. Then another sentence with this marker. Then another sentence with this pencil. Each line would be different, unique, with its own color, flair and personality. But each sentence would be mine because they are just the instrument; I am the author.

Each book of the Bible has its human author’s personality, but they wrote what God told them to say.

The miracle of inspiration is as impossible to explain as the virgin birth.

The treasure of the Word of God is priceless because of its Authorship.

  • Psalms 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

The Word of God is one of the most valuable, priceless resources for the child of God:

III. Because of its Attributes

Of all the books in the world, there is not another book that comes close to being more complex.

Never in history has a single book had the potential that this book has.

  • It can Convict – Hebrews 4:12
  • It can Convert – James 1:18, 21
  • It can Correct – 2 Timothy 3:16
  • It can Cleanse – Psalm 119:9, 11
  • It can Conquer – Ephesians 6:17
  • It can Comfort – I Thessalonians 4:18
  • It can Intimidate
  • It can Infiltrate
  • It can Indoctrinate
  • It can Illuminate
  • It can Invigorate

It is a Fire; It is a Hammer; It is a Sword

The Word of God is one of the most valuable, priceless resources for the child of God:

II. Because of its Announcements

The riches of the Word of God start with this simple fact: If not for the Word of God, we would even know about the riches available to the believer.

Furthermore, we couldn’t even BE a believer if not for the Word of God.

FOR EXAMPLE:

               A. Its Announcement about God

Everything we know about God is found within the pages of the Word of God.

There is no way we could put a price on the information we learn about God in the Bible.

The God of the Bible transcends our finite intellect.

There is not another “god” or “diety” with the unique qualities of the God of the Bible.

He’s infinite, sovereign, triune, holy and loving.

Romans 1 tells us that nature and creation would announce God’s EXISTENCE.

But it through the Bible that we understand His Excellence, His Exploits and His Expectations.

               B. Its Announcement about Man

The portrayal of man in the Bible is priceless in our understand of ourselves.

We are described as base, vile, sinful, corrupt and depraved.

No man would ever write such a low description of himself.

This announcement had to come from God.

               C. Its Announcement about Sin

The world glamorizes sin and exalts it on every front.

The announcement of the horror of sin, the hurt of sin and the heartaches of sin are invaluable.

Man announces that sin is fascinating, fun, and it is free.

               D. Its Announcement about Salvation

Man’s idea of salvation is absurd.

They don’t even think they need it.

Those that do try to earn it with filthy rags.

Man cannot even begin to come up with a plan of salvation that compares to the one found in Scripture.

The treasure of the Scripture is priceless because of the announcement of salvation alone!

Conclusion: How much value have you placed on the Scriptures? Do you read it? Do you meditate on it? Do you study it? Do you know it?
