The Face of God – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

The Face of God

Psalms 27

  • 7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
  • 8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.
  • 9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

I. The Significance of His Face

When we think of a person, or hear their name, we think of their face.

This stands for the UNIQUE IDENTITY of a person.

We take pictures of people’s face, not the back of the leg or their elbows or feet.

Artist’ paint people’s face.

There is something UNIQUE about the FACE OF GOD.

Don’t settle for somebody else’s description – get your own!

  • Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

We are not talking about literally seeing God with our literal, physical eyes.

Jesus explained to the woman at the well that God is a Spirit.

  • John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Understand: No man hath seen God at any time.

  • John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
  • 1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

NOTE: Part of Cain’s curse was to be exiled from the face of God.

Genesis 4

  • 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
  • 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

The face of God stands for the POINT OF ATTENTION.

               A. The Source of His Seeing

  • Jeremiah 16:17 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes.

               B. The Source of His Hearing

Isaiah 59:1

  • 1 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
  • 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Daniel 9

  • 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.
  • 18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.

Psalm 102

  • 1 «A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed, and poureth out his complaint before the LORD.» Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee.
  • 2 Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

               C. The Source of His Glory

When Moses asked God to reveal to him His glory, notice what God said:

Exodus 33

  • 18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
  • 20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

               D. The Sign of His Displeasure

When God ever turns His face away, that is a horrible day in the life of a person.

  • 1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

David also said in Psalm 51

  • 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
  • 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
  • 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

II. The Seeking of His Face

Seeing the face of God means that He is no longer a POWER or a PRESENCE – BUT A PERSON.

Seeing the face of God through the eye of faith is an understanding of His essence.

               A. The Conditions of Seeking His Face

  • 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
  • Hosea 5:15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

               B. The Continuation of Seeking His Face

  • 1 Chronicles 16:11 Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
  • Psalms 27:8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

III. The Satisfaction of His Face

When we see the face of God, several things are bound to happen.

God uses His face to communicate in a number of ways.

One thing is certain: when we see His face, marvelous things take place!

Notice just a few ways this phrase is used in the Word of God.

               A. The Satisfaction of His Statutes

David said it like this:

  • Psalms 119:135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.

               B. The Satisfaction of His Salvation

Jacob said:

  • Genesis 32:30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
  • Psalms 80:3 Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

               C. The Satisfaction of His Spirit

  • Ezekiel 39:29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

               D. The Satisfaction in His Sanctuary

Daniel 9

  • 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.

Conclusion: It is my prayer that we all desire to seek the face of God. We need His face to shine upon us!

I am longing for the day when we shall see our God – face to face!

Revelation 22

  • 1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
  • 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
  • 3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
  • 4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
