The Crown of the Grandparent – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

The Crown of the Grandparent

Proverbs 17:6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

Intro: Today we are celebrating Grandparent Day in our school chapel. What a blessing our grandchildren are!

God’s word says that our grandchildren are a crown.

I. With a crown comes Opposition

When someone wears a crown, there is always opposition.

Someone is always fighting to take that crown.

Your grandchildren are a crown.

The devil wants them.

The world wants them.

This perverted society wants them.

They will do everything in their power to take them from you.

The funeral homes are filled with people’s grandchildren.

The drug rehabs are overflowing with people’s grandchildren.

The abortion clinics see a steady stream of people’s granddaughters.

  • John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…

But you are not helpless!

You also have the right to oppose things.

Grandparents are known for giving their grandchildren everything they want.

Somebody has to love them enough to say no!

Famous words from grandparents… “When we were kids…”

Don’t go along with the decline of society!

Be an obstacle to your grandchildren’s path if they are headed that way.

II. With a crown comes Obligation

The role of one that wears a crown comes with great responsibility.

The one wearing the crown cannot delegate everything.

They have a job to do.

Nobody can do it but them.

Grandparents have a unique role to play in the lives of their grandchildren.

Take it seriously.

It is not an obligation to buy them everything. Teach them to work. To make money. To save money. To invest it.

It is not your obligation to pay their bills. It is your obligation to teach them to work and pay their own way.

It is not your obligation to make them happy. Teach them to pursue happiness.

It is not your obligation to take up for them and fight their battles. Teach them to fight and defend themselves.

It is not your obligation to answer for them. Teach them to answer for themselves.

It is not your obligation to make their life easier. It is your job to teach them to take care of themselves.

III. With a crown comes Opportunity

You have a crown – which means you have influence.

Use your influence to make a difference.

Genesis 48:1-20

Grandfather influenced the outcome of his grandsons.

Use every bit of influence you have in order to point them in the right direction.

Psalm 127

  • 3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
  • 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Paul recognized that young Timothy was the product of good training.

  • 2 Timothy 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
