So Great Salvation – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

So Great Salvation

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Intro: Paul referred to our salvation as “so great” in our text.

He asked a question – “How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation…”

NEGLECT: negligent; careless; to make light of; to disregard

The unsaved neglect it by refusing it; rejecting it; ignoring it; not believing it.

The saved can neglect it by failing to appreciate it; taking it for granted; failing to surrender to God and serve him

Many believers do not seem to understand just how great salvation is.

2 Peter

  • 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
  • 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

Rejecting a perfect Savior because of imperfect Christians is

I. Great in its Revelation

Hebrews 2

  • 1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

               A. The Word Spoken by the Angels

  • 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

ILLUSTRATION:

Matthew 1

  • 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
  • 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Luke 2

  • 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
  • 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
  • 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
  • 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
  • 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

               B. The Witness of the Signs, Wonders, Miracles and Gifts of the Holy Spirit

  • 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

No doubt this is referring to both the miracles Jesus and his disciples performed, as well as the unprecedented working of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2.

This salvation is so great that God chose to reveal it Himself, through angels, through other believers and confirm it with signs, wonders, miracles and the gifts of the Spirit.

SEE Ephesians 3

  • 1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
  • 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
  • 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
  • 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
  • 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
  • 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

II. Great in its Reach

  • Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Unlike us, God doesn’t want a single person to die unsaved.

  • Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

The Bible describes the unbeliever as “without hope” in Ephesians 2.

We were without Christ, without God and without hope.

But that was before Jesus stepped in.

We experienced “so great salvation” because it could do what nobody else could do.

The thief on the cross was reached.

The persecutor of the church, Saul of Tarsus was reached. (the chiefest of sinners)

III. Great in its Reassurance

In a world where literally everything we have can be taken away from us, I’m glad our salvation is forever.

I am grateful this morning that this “so great salvation” is eternal.

I am glad I wasn’t asked to earn it.

  • 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
  • 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

John 10

  • 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
  • 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

I am also grateful that the work that God started in me is not up to me to complete.

  • Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

He is the Author and the Finisher of our faith.

  • 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Romans 8

  • 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
  • 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
  • 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

IV. Great in its Reward

  • Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

I’m grateful this morning that God is a REWARDER of them that diligently seek Him!

Paul listed several of the amazing rewards of being a child of God in the book of Ephesians.

In Ephesians 3, Paul referred to them as “the unsearchable riches of Christ” in 3:8.

TURN TO EPHESIANS 1

Eternity would now allow us to list all of the rewards that come with salvation.

  • Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

               A. Sacrifice for Sins

  • Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
  • John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

               B. Security of the Spirit

Ephesians 1

  • 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
  • 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

               C. Seated with the Savior

Ephesians 2

  • 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
  • 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
