No Vacancy

Ephesians 4:27

I. The Opponent – “…the devil…”

The one we are trying to keep out is our archenemy.

The problem is, many Christians are playing.

The devil is NOT playing.

I wonder how many times a day we recognize out ultimate opponent.

SEE Ephesians 6

  • 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
  • 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

II. The Option – “…neither give…”

This teaches us that we have a say in the matter.

We can either give place, or we cannot give place.

Satan cannot come in unless you let him in.

He has no power; not one ounce of authority in the life of a believer.

So how does a child of God not give place?

Look at several ways in Ephesians 4 we can NOT give place.

               A. Walk not

  • 17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

               B. Work not

  • 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
  • 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

               C. Wear not

  • 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
  • 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
  • 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

III. The Opening – “… give place…”

The word place here literally means any portion or space marked off, as it were from

surrounding space

We use the phrase, “Save me a place.”

We want people to keep that spot vacant for us so when we arrive, we will have a place to sit.

They create their own vulnerabilities by leaving places vacant in their life for the devil to sit.

Mark 3

  • 26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
  • 27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

Don’t give him an opening in:

               A. Your Mind

  • 17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
  • 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
  • 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

               B. Your Materialism

  • 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

Lasciviousnessunbridled lust; wantonness, outrageousness, excess

Greediness greedy desire to have more, covetousness, avarice

  • 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

This verse speaks of understanding the proper motives for working, making money and stewardship.

How many times has Satan found an opening through misappropriation of money?

               C. Your Mouth

  • 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
  • 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
  • 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
  • 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
  • 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
  • 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
