I’m Dreaming of a Right Christmas
Intro: Christmas time is a time when everybody is trying to get it right.
- Trying to find just the right gift.
- Looking for the right wrapping paper and the right bow. (guys prefer a bag)
- Hoping for the right response.
- And all the while, trying to get it all for just the right price!
This year, I’m dreaming of a Right Christmas.
There is so much wrong this time of year.
People going to the wrong places, doing the wrong things, drinking the wrong things, hanging around the wrong people, emphasizing all the wrong things.
If anybody ought to get it right, it should be God’s people.
We should all be dreaming of a RIGHT CHRISTMAS!
I. Right in its Priority – vs. 7
- Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
We assume that the reason there was no room in the inn is because it was full of other people.
Though there is no mention of an innkeeper, we have to assume that they were the one turning Joseph and Mary away.
But before we get too judgmental; before we are too harsh, let us do a little soul-searching.
Most of us will have some time off this week.
I hope you spend some time reading your Bible. (This is God talking to us.)
I hope you spend some time in prayer. (This is us talking to Him.)
Don’t let your schedule become so crowded that there is no room for Him in your day.
Don’t let your day get so full that you can’t make room for Him.
Don’t make the mistake of spending time with everyone and everything except the Reason for the season!
You’ll spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
You’ll spend a lot of time in the dining room.
You’ll spend time with your children.
You’ll spend time watching Christmas movies.
You’ll spend time enjoying your new stuff.
Make sure you spend time with Jesus this Christmas!
Make it a RIGHT CHRISTMAS this year!
II. Right in its Participation – vs. 15, 16
The Lord had made it known unto them, so THEY wanted to know more.
This was a PERSONAL REVELATION, so it required PERSONAL PARTICIPATION.
- Verse 9 – and the angel of the Lord came UPON THEM.
- Verse 9 – and the glory of the Lord shone round ABOUT THEM.
- Verse 10 – And the angel said UNTO THEM. I BRING YOU good tidings.
- Verse 11 – For UNTO YOU is born this day…
- Verse 12 – And this shall be a sign UNTO YOU – YE SHALL FIND…
- Verse 15 – as the angels had gone away FROM THEM..
The fact that they were privy to privileged information demanded that they get involved!
I love their statement in verse 15.
- 15 Let us NOW go AND SEE THIS THING WHICH THE LORD HATH MADE KNOWN UNTO US.
- 16 …and they came with haste…
They were not satisfied with what they had heard. They wanted to know more! Right then!
- The Message was an answer to centuries of prayer and prophecy.
- The Messengers were Out of this world.
- The Method was unprecedented and unparalleled
But they wanted to know more!
The Angel told them a lot, but the angel said, Ye shall find the babe… Insinuating that they should not be content to just hear about it, but to go see it and experience it for themselves!
Make sure you don’t settle with what you’ve seen and heard this Christmas!
Make it a RIGHT CHRISTMAS this year and keep learning. Keep looking and longing for more.
III. Right in its Proclamation – vs. 17
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying.
I love this – vs. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
I’m curious to know what those around us are wondering about??
Are they wondering why we haven’t said anything?
Are they wondering why we say we are Christians but aren’t living like it?
Are they possibly wondering why we say that salvation is the greatest thing but we won’t share it?
How many of your friends and family and co-workers are wondering at those that were told to them??
NOTE: These shepherds could have the attitude, “If God wanted everybody to know, He would have sent a heavenly host of angels to tell THEM.”
They were so grateful for the fact that they got to hear it first-hand that they wanted to share it!!
IV. Right in its Praise – vs. 20
NOTE: It was the angels praising God in verse 13, 14.
But after they encountered the Christ child, it was the shepherds that returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had HEARD AND SEEN. As it was told unto them.
There will be a lot of excitement on Christmas day.
Shouts of joy over presents.
Squeals of delight over toys and trinkets.
Lots of hugs and kisses and “thank you’s” and “it’s just what I wanted”
Don’t forget to give thanks to God for all He’s done.
Don’t forget to say Thank You to Jesus for coming.
Don’t forget to get excited over what He’s done and what He’s going to do.
Make this a RIGHT CHRISTMAS!
Give God glory and praise God for all the things you’ve seen and heard!!
It was not just AS IT WAS TOLD UNTO YOU – It was EVEN BETTER THAN IT WAS TOLD TO YOU!
