Hungry for Knowledge

Calvary Baptist School Chapel message

Proverbs 2

  • 1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
  • 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
  • 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
  • 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
  • 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

I. The Student of Knowledge – vs. 1, 2

One of the ways you and I can learn is to listen to someone that knows more than we do.

There are several ways to learn.

  • We can learn by Experience.
  • We can learn by Example.
  • We can learn by Exhortation.

The easiest way, the best way, the most convenient way to learn is to listen to a teacher.

It is amazing at how easy God made it to learn, yet so many refuse to learn that way.

The Bible is literally filled with the importance of listening to instruction.

Over and over, God reminds us that being a teachable student is extremely important.

Here are just a few verses. There are multitudes of them!

  • Psalms 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
  • Proverbs 8:10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
  • Proverbs 20:15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Proverbs 1

  • 1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
  • 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
  • 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
  • 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
  • 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
  • Proverbs 1:22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
  • Proverbs 10:14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

LAY UP: to hide, treasure, treasure or store up

  • Proverbs 12:1 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
  • Proverbs 15:14 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

Here is a great verse:

  • Jeremiah 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

The Apostle Paul commended the church in Thessalonica for being so receptive to truth.

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received [it] not [as] the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

II. The Search for Knowledge

  • 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
  • 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

One way we can learn and attain knowledge is to search for it.

There will not always be a parent or a teacher or a pastor to tell you everything you need to know.

There will be times when you will have to look up the answer yourself.

You will need to make knowledge a priority and learn how to search for answers and truth.

  • Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

God is pleased when we seek and search.

  • Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
  • Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
  • John 5:39 Search the scriptures;
  • Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Learn to study; learn to research; learn to dig for truth and answers.

III. The Satisfaction of Knowledge

  • 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

The Bible is clear that if we are teachable and listen to those that are wiser than us, and if we will take the initiative to search and dig and study and pursue knowledge, God will reward us.

Verse 5 says, “Then shalt thou understand…and find the knowledge of God.”

  • Proverbs 24:4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
  • Proverbs 24:5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
  • Proverbs 24:14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
