How to Honor Veterans (of the Military)
Romans 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Intro: This morning, we will look at How to Honor Veterans of the Military. Tonight, we will look at How to Honor Veterans of the Ministry.
This past Thursday our nation celebrated the sacrifice and service of our military veterans. I want to go on record again by saying that I love, and I appreciate all those that have served in our armed forces. Both past and present, our veterans are heroes and I want to let them know just how much they are esteemed.
As I prepared for this message, I thought of all the ways that we as Americans celebrate and honor our Veterans.
Some hang flags on their front porch.
Others go to the cemetery and decorate graves.
Some have get-togethers and cookouts.
Some post patriotic pictures and photos of their servicemen and servicewomen family members on their social media.
But as I thought about it, I realized that there are far better ways to demonstrate our appreciation for our veterans.
Hanging flags is easy. Grilling hamburgers is easy. Posting memes is easy.
But does it really measure up to the sacrifices of our veterans?
The Apostle Paul told the church at Rome to give honor to whom honor.
The context is the ones that God appointed to bear the sword as a terror to evil.
That includes our military veterans.
(EXPOUND the passage.)
Here are a couple ways that I believe we can really honor those that have fought and died for us.
They deserve fear (respect) tribute; they deserve honor.
I. Defend the Freedoms (that they did)
QUOTE: The truth is, all might be free if they valued freedom, and defended it as they ought. — Samuel Adams
I’m appalled at how quickly Americans have relinquished their freedoms.
Our liberties and personal freedoms have been stripped away from us at an unprecedented rate.
The American population has rolled over and allowed corporations and unelected government bureaucrats dictate every aspect of their lives with little or no protest.
QUOTE: The liberties of our country, the freedoms of our civil Constitution are worth defending at all hazards; it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors. They purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood. It will bring a mark of everlasting infamy on the present generation – enlightened as it is – if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of designing men. – Samuel Adams
Patriots are now called domestic terrorists while ANTIFA and Black Lives Matters are celebrated.
America has stood by and allowed radical liberals and socialists extremists to pull down statues of our heroes.
Congress and the media have spent more time and energy investigating and condemning what happened at the Capitol Building on January 6th than they have the overwhelming evidence of foreign interference and unprecedented irregularities in our last presidential election.
Thanks to public school, secular college, and the mainstream media, the average America seemingly does not appreciate freedom and liberty as much as our forefathers.
They are so programmed, so accustomed to mind-control and so hungry for acceptance that they will do anything to fit in and not be ridiculed.
From the local school board all the way up to the White House, freedom has been attacked.
On the local level, the state level, and the federal level, freedom is under assault.
QUOTE: America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. – Abraham Lincoln
Steve Bannon was just indicted for “contempt for Congress.”
If contempt for Congress is a crime, then I’m a criminal. Congress is a cesspool of vipers, liars and traitors.
Our lawmakers are no longer trying to protect the American dream; they are trying to annihilate it.
Our elected officials are more concerned about being reelected than they are doing their job.
We cannot properly identify the threats to our freedoms if we have an unhealthy respect for those that do not appreciate freedom.
Freedom of Speech is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
QUOTE: Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech. – Benjamin Franklin
Freedom of Religion has been invaded on every level.
Churches, Christian schools, Christian colleges are under a full-out assault.
Pulpits have grown silent.
- QUOTE: John Adams said, “Let the pulpit resound with the doctrine and sentiments of religious liberty. Let us hear of the dignity of man’s nature, and the noble rank he holds among the works of God…”
QUOTE: “We, the General Assembly of Virginia, do enact that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, or shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions of belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capabilities.” – Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Act for Religious Freedom, 1786
QUOTE: “We hold it for a fundamental and inalienable truth that religion and the manner of discharging it can be directed only by reason and conviction not by force and violence. The religion, then, of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man; and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate.” – James Monroe, Address to the Virginia General Assembly, June 20, 1785
QUOTE: “Spiritual freedom is the root of political liberty…As the union between spiritual freedom and political liberty seems nearly inseparable, it is our duty to defend both.” – Thomas Paine
How can we honor veterans?
Have a passion for liberty and freedom that will motivate you to defend it against all enemies; foreign and domestic.
QUOTE: Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it, and then hand it to them with the well fought lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same. And if you and I don’t do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free. – Ronald Reagan in 1961
The best way you can honor a veteran is defend our freedoms like they did.
Love freedom. Defend freedom. Demand freedom. Protect freedom.
As Patriots, we must love and preserve our freedoms for our children.
Likewise, as Christians, our lives must be consumed with promoting liberty and freedom for the slaves of sin.
Jesus Christ came to set captives free.
- John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
The Holy Spirit of God will bring about true freedom and liberty through Jesus Christ.
- 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
II. Dominate the Fight (that they did)
Americans have always been fighters.
Japan’s mistake at Pearl Harbor was they didn’t finish us off.
They announced after it was over, “I’m afraid all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant.”
The Marine Corps anthem goes like this:
From the Halls of Montezuma, To the Shores of Tripoli;
We will fight our country’s battles In the air, on land and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.
Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in ev’ry clime and place Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job– The United States Marines.
Here’s health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve
In many a strife we’ve fought for life And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines.
QUOTE: If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may be even a worse fate, you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves. – Winston Churchill
The attacks on our freedoms by the proponents of socialism under the guise of equality and diversity have resulted in diminished liberties.
We need to step up and dominate the fight for the soul of our nation.
We must dominate the fight against this demonic progressive, liberal agenda that is sweeping this country.
We have freedom today because our forefathers had the guts to fight.
They didn’t allow tyranny to go unchallenged.
They didn’t submit to unconstitutional laws and orders.
They fought back.
They didn’t just fight on the battlefields.
They fought in the statehouses and the house of Delegates.
They fought in halls of Congress.
They fought in the courtrooms.
They fought in the boardrooms.
They fought back using every means available.
They wrote letters.
They wrote articles.
They used the printing press, the newspapers, the Pony Express.
They fought bad ideas with good ideas.
They fought evil ideology with godly, biblical, wholesome ideology.
They fought crooked politicians by electing people with character and integrity.
They revoked illegal laws by knowing the Constitution and challenging them.
Do you want to honor a veteran today?
Pick up the sword and get in the fight!
Get off the sidelines. Get out of the bleachers.
Dominate the fight like they did.
Take the battle to the enemy like they did!
Call your Congressmen; call your Senators; sign petitions; write letters.
For the believer, our biggest enemy is Satan.
And he’s kicking some of you down the road like a tin can.
Fight back! Fight for your testimony! Fight for your family! Fight for your church!
- 2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
- 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith,
- Jude 1:3 …it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
III. Display the Fearlessness (that they did)
America – the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave – not the afraid; the cowards; the fearful; the intimidated.
In days gone by, calling a man a coward was fighting words.
Today, fear is celebrated; safety is most people’s main priority.
QUOTE: “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” ― Benjamin Franklin
The merchants of fear would go out of business if people would stop buying it!
Courage is woven into our nation’s DNA.
Even more so as believers.
- 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Our nation is being overrun with godless, perverted, unjust and unholy philosophies.
Patriots, parents, pastors and
Our children should see us bold, courageous, and unafraid of conflict.
- Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
- Joseph refused to lie with Potiphar’s wife and told her so.
- Nathan refused to cover David’s sin and told him so.
- The three Hebrew children refused to bow to the king’s idol and told him so.
- John the Baptist confronted Herod over his adulterous lifestyle.
- The Apostle Paul stood in front of Agrippa and begged him to be saved.
- God’s people have always been courageous.
Brave men are becoming more and more difficult to find.
The path that most people choose is one of caution and ease.
QUOTE: In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot. – Mark Twain
- QUOTE: Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty. – Thomas Jefferson
Nobody wants to die for a bunch of cowards.
Nobody fought and died so you and I could live in fear.
And they didn’t fight and die so you could whine about being a victim every day.
Our veterans fought and died so we could live our best life.
That life is one that confronts challenges with courage and determination.
That life is one that embraces difficulties and doesn’t allow opposition to diminish their dreams.
We cannot continue to be silenced for fear of being called a name.
QUOTE: The Colonists have been branded with the odious names of traitors and rebels only for complaining of their grievances. — Samuel Adams
People are afraid of saying something about the invasion at the southern border for fear of being called a xenophobic.
People are afraid of saying something about Black Lives Matters for fear of being called a racist.
People are afraid of saying something about ANTIFA for fear of being called a fascist.
People are afraid of saying something about abortion and Planned Parenthood for fear of being called misogynist.
People are afraid of saying something about this gender fluid insanity for fear of being called homophobic.
People are afraid of saying something about Sharia law being implemented in the US for fear of being called Islamophobic.
People are afraid of saying something about election fraud for fear of being called a domestic terrorist.
Our soldiers didn’t fight and die on the battlefield so Americans could be silenced by fear.
Our veterans didn’t face horror of guns and tanks and grenades and landmines, death and destruction so we could hide from labels and insulting names.
If people calling you names silences you, that’s cowardice.
If people labeling you causes you to back down, that’s because you lack courage and conviction.
- QUOTE: For true patriots to be silent, is dangerous. — Samuel Adams
You want to know how you can honor our veterans??
Live fearlessly like they did. Face the tyranny and the sin and the abomination with courage!
If you want to honor those that DID SOMETHING, the least we can do is SAY SOMETHING!
Use your voice to sound the alarm.
Use your vote to bring about change.
Use your relationship with God to embolden you to make a difference in this generation!
Use your testimony to help somebody else find God.
Use what God has done for you to help somebody else get help.
Honor our veterans by being a soldier of the Cross.
Lift up the blood-stained banner and tell the world that Jesus Saves.
