Choose Life – Pastor Stacey Shiflett

Choose Life

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Intro: In this passage, God is ratifying the Palestinian covenant with Israel.

This covenant has two aspects – the legal aspect and the grace aspect.

The legal aspect was immediate and came with conditions. Deut. 27-29

The grace aspect was future and was unconditional. Deut. 30:1-9

The Nation of Israel was given a simple and clear condition in order to experience the blessings of this covenant – found in Deut. 28:1

They did not choose to obey this condition and are experiencing God’s curse and punishment even today.

In Deut. 28, God gave them the blessings in verses 1-14.

The curses are listed from verses 15-68.

The unconditional aspects of this covenant are yet to be realized.

God will gather His people from all over the world and bring them back to the land He promised them.

Chapter 30 is a review of the covenant and is summarized in a few verses.

The bottom line was this – they had a choice – life or death; blessing or cursing.

God told them what He would do, and now the choice was theirs to make.

Our text verse is pretty much the bottom line for every person here today.

You’ve got a choice – life or death.

I. The Opportunity

God created man with a free volition.

Contrary to some people, man has the opportunity to choose or reject God.

God gave man an opportunity to choose in the Garden of Eden.

There were two trees – the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

  • Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

God’s instructions were clear.

Genesis 2

  • 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
  • 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Instead of eating of the Tree of Life, they chose to eat of the forbidden tree.

God sent an angel to guard the Tree of Life to keep them from eating of it and living forever.

From that day forward, man has chosen death more often than not.

II. The Options

Accepting or Rejecting – it’s just that simple.

Choose Life by Accepting God’s Son

Some think there are many ways to God.

There’s only one!

  • John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 1

  • 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
  • 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
  • 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
  • 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

And for those that do not believe we have a choice, Jesus said this:

  • John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

When you reject Jesus, you choose death. Plain and simple!

Jesus is the ONLY way to have Life.

John 3

  • 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
  • 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
  • 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  • John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
  • John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
  • John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
  • John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
  • 1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
  • 1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

III. The Obligation

Whether you want to or not, you must choose.

Not choosing is NOT an option.

You can’t remain neutral.

By not choosing God, you choose to serve yourself or other gods.

By not choosing life, you choose death.

By not choosing God, you choose death.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Psalms 119:30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me
