I. The Prerequisitehaving all sufficiency in all things

We have been blessed with every possible advantage to abound.

We have an “all sufficient” God.

El-Shaddaithe all sufficient God

  • 2 Corinthians 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

Moses on Mount Sinai heard God say this:

  • Exodus 34:5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

David said, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1

Those of us that have met the All Sufficient One has met the prerequisite for the abundant life.

  • John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

ABUNDANTLY: exceeding some number or measure or rank or need; over and above, more than is necessary, superadded

Those that have met Jesus understand the sufficiency that He brings.

  • John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
  • John 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
  • Isaiah 55:1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

II. The Possibilitymay abound…

An abounding Christian is not and should not be a rarity.

It is God’s will that EVERY single Christian abound.

  • You can abound.
  • In spite of your family, you can abound!
  • In spite of your education, you can abound!
  • In spite of your past, you can abound!
  • In spite of your limitations, God wants you to abound!

It is not just a select few that can experience God’s overflowing blessings in their life.

  • Psalms 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

It is God’s will that EVERY single Christian abound.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
  • Colossians 2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

III. The Purposeto every good work

Abounding is not to make us look good.

Abounding is not about achieving a certain level of Christianity for bragging rights.

Abounding is not something we should strive for so we can fit in with an elite group of church members.

The purpose for abounding is to enable us to be more effective servants of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The purpose is that we will experience enough for ourselves and others.

God wants us overflowing so we can be a source of help for others.

  • Proverbs 11: 24, 25 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
