A Last Word And A Lost World

Acts 1:8

Introduction: The last thing Jesus spoke of before being taken up was to impress upon the hearts of his disciples the need to tell the world who He was and what He had done for them. It is easy for the local church to get so caught up in service and ministry that we forget the purpose of it all. Let ask God today to remind us of what it is all about.

I. Their Delay – 1:8

A. They waited for Divine Power – 1:8 “But ye shall receive power…”

  • Luke 24:49 “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
  • Matthew 28:18, 19 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore…

You can’t say you can’t!  You can!! I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

B. They waited for Divine Presence – 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost…”

  • Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

C. They waited for Divine Proof– see Acts 2:22

  • Acts 1:3  To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

We now have all of these, so there’s no use in waiting around any longer! It’s time to witness!

II. Their Duty – Acts 1:8 and 2:32

  1. a legal term – you are EXHIBIT A

JOKE: There was a man that was called up to be a witness of a crime where a man got his ear bit off by another man. He was asked, “Did you see it happen?” He answered, “No.” He was asked, “Did you hear my client threaten to bite off the plaintiff’s ear?” He answered, “No.” He was asked, “Were you even there when the plaintiff’s ear was bitten off?? He answered, “No.” “Then why are you sitting up here as a witness if you didn’t see it happen, if you didn’t hear it happen, and you weren’t even there when the plaintiff’s ear was bitten off? How can you accuse my client of biting off a man’s ear if you weren’t there when it happened?” He answered, “Because I was there when he SPIT IT OUT!”

  1. an historical term – were you there when you got saved? What happened?

A. It involved Preaching – Acts 2:14 “But Peter …lifted up his voice…”

  • Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand.
  • Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

B. It involved Baptizing

  • Matthew 28:19  …baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

C. It involved Teaching

  • Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Every ministry of Calvary Baptist Church should have one goal: to see people saved, baptized and discipled.

Reaching souls with the message of the gospel is the sole business of the church

III. Their Directions

NOTE: They lived in Jerusalem, so that was their starting point.

But Jesus told them to be witnesses BOTH in Jerusalem, and….

This speaks of a simultaneous witnessing.

A. The Unreceptive – Jerusalem was where Jesus was crucified

  • Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee,

B. The Unattractive – Judaea – barren, lonely wilderness

C. The Unwanted – Samaria – signify crossing racial barriers and prejudices

“I must needs go through Samaria!”  John 4

D. The Unreached – uttermost part of the earth

  • Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Conclusion: The gospel is not the good news if it doesn’t get there in time!!!
