A Glorious Church Sermon Series – Part 4

The Presentation

Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself…

Intro: We have looked at:

  1. The Picture
  2. The Purging
  3. The Process

This morning we are going to examine “The Presentation” that is found in verse 26.

There is a key concept in these phrase that I am afraid that many Christians fail to grasp.

The Christian life is not about you. It is not about me. It is all about Him!

ILLUSTRATION: I love onions! I can eat them with every meal. I like them raw, cooked, grilled, sautéed, sliced, chopped – anyway you want to serve them. I love onion rings. I love blooming onions. I love onions in nearly everything and on everything. BUT – my wife doesn’t like onions. Or the smell of them. She can’t stand the smell of them on my breath. So – guess what? I don’t eat onions much.  Why? I like kissing my wife more than I like eating onions. It’s not even a sacrifice!

The Christian life is not about you. It is not about me. It is all about Him!

We get so distracted looking for the benefits. The blessings. The self-gratification aspects of being a follower of Christ.

We gauge our level of commitment based on what’s in it for us.

We base the extent of our dedication on how it fits us, our schedule, our plans, our beliefs.

We examine the conveniences and inconveniences of carrying a cross and then make up our mind.

But what we fail to consider is this simple but life-changing fact: It’s not about us – IT IS ALL ABOUT HIM!

The picture – the courtship, the love at first sight, the betrothal, the marriage – was all about HIM.

The purging – the sanctifying and the cleansing of the bride of Christ – was all about HIS desire and will.

The process – the washing of water by the word – was all for HIS honor and GLORY.

Notice the statement in verse 27 – THAT HE MIGHT PRESENT IT (THE CHURCH) TO HIMSELF…

I. He Recruited Us unto Himself

  • Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
  • Luke 18:16 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
  • Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
  • Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
  • 2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

II. He Reconciled Us unto Himself

  • 2 Corinthians 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
  • 2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
  • Colossians 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

III. He Refined Us unto Himself

  • Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

IV. He will Receive Us unto Himself

  • John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Conclusion: He will Present Us unto Himself

Ephesians 5

  • 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
  • 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
  • 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

We were presented to Him at Salvation.

  • John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
  • John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
  • John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

We are being presented NOW.

   Colossians 1

  • 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
  • 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
  • Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

We will be presented to Him one day in Heaven.

  • 2 Corinthians 4:14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.
  • Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

I’ll say it one more time. IT’S ALL ABOUT HIM!

  • Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself A GLORIOUS CHURCH!!
