What Now?

Exodus 3:3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

Intro: The word “NOW” appears in this story 7 times.

This is such a small word, but a powerful word.

Each time this word appears, Moses is transitioning from one stage of his life to another.

God moves in stages. God works in stages.

God is working in your life – in stages.

Which one of these phases might you be in?

What NOW are you living in?

I. The NOW of Contentment

  • Exodus 3:1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, [even] to Horeb.

This stage of Moses’ life was one of ease and contentment.

He kept the flock of Jethro.

They were not his sheep; he was just the under-shepherd.

There was a certain amount of responsibility, but he was the employee of his father-in-law.

He had been holding this job for 40 years.

SEE 2:21 – Exodus 2:21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

II. The NOW of Consideration

  • Exodus 3:3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

His life of ease and contentment was about to be shaken up.

He was so comfortable and tunnel-visioned that God had to set a bush on fire to wake him up.

The angel of the Lord appeared unto him – vs. 2

God manifested Himself to Moses despite:

               A. His Life – “…Moses kept the flock of Jethro…” vs. 1 God appears to shepherds! (Luke 2)

               B. His Location – you may be on the backside of the desert, but God can find you!

               C. His Limitations – Moses was hiding from Pharaoh because he’d killed an Egyptian (2:15)

God knows where you are.

He knows how to find you, and He knows how to get your attention.

It took Moses awhile, but he finally said, “I will NOW turn aside…”

God had to do something supernatural to get him out of his rut; his routine; his life of contentment.

III. The NOW of Commissioning

  • Exodus 3:9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.
  • Exodus 3:10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

Come now…and I will send thee.

What a statement!

This conversation with this burning bush just got real.

This went from being a novelty to a life-changing calling.

Come now?? Like – right now??? Yes! God wants you to respond to the need NOW!

IV. The NOW of Confirmation

  • Exodus 4:6 And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.
  • Exodus 4:12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

This was the stage in Moses’ life where he knew God was with him, God would enable him and help him.

God promised to not only go with him but to be his mouth and to teach him what to say.

With the signs of the rod becoming a serpent, and the hand of leprosy, Moses knew God could.

He didn’t feel like he was the right one.

He didn’t feel qualified or able, but God promised to go with him, and He did.

V. The NOW of Confrontation

  • Exodus 3:18 And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.

Moses used every excuse in the book – to no avail.

In chapter 5, verse 1 – Moses had to do it.

There was no more putting it off.

There comes a time when talking, and planning, and praying, and meetings come to an end.

There comes a time when you must bite the bullet and say what needs to be said.

You must do what needs to be done.

The time for pep talks and confirmations and morale boosting is over; it’s time to do it.

God is depending on you. God’s people are depending on you. The work of God depends on you being willing to walk up to Pharaoh and say, “NOW LET US GO!!!”

Some of you are dragging your feet, doing what needs to be done.

You are putting if off.

That conversation; that decision; that gut-wrenching thing that just has to be done that you don’t want to do.

That thing that God keeps telling you to do, and you can’t talk him out of it to save your life!

Conclusion: What stage of life are you in right now? What NOW are you living in?

God has something He wants you to do. Are you willing?

Will you now turn aside and see?

God moves in stages. God works in stages.

God is working in your life – in stages.

Which one of these phases might you be in?

What NOW are you living in?
