The Dangers of Fake News – Galatians 1:6-12

The Dangers of Fake News

Galatians 1:6-12

Intro: Everybody today is talking about Fake News. The President, the media, and everybody in between. People are finding themselves in the situation of having to discern if what they are reading “as news” is really the news.  There’s a war going on between the president and the major news outlets.  More importantly, there is a war going on today between the armies of God and the armies of Satan for the souls of men. Worse than the “fake news” we see in the headlines today, is the distorting of the gospel and the word of God.

  1. Paul’s Assessment – vs. 6, 7 “another gospel”; “which is not another”; “any other gospel

Paul’s assessment was that a multiplicity of “gospels” existed.

Not everybody that is preaching the gospel is preaching the same message.

Not everything under the cloak of “the gospel” is really the gospel.

NOTE: The word GOSPEL simply means “good news”.

So, if there are “other gospel’s” out there, they are not the good news. They are bad news.

They have taken what is supposed to be GOOD NEWS and turned it into FAKE NEWS.

  1. Paul’s Animosity – vs. 8, 9 …let him be accursed – “a person or thing doomed to destruction”

Paul used the strongest possible language to describe what should and would happen to participants of “fake news.”

Paul didn’t have much patience for a person that took the truth of God and changed it.

Paul wasn’t a fan of ecumenicalism! He didn’t hold hands with false preachers and false prophets!

  1. Paul’s Authenticity – vs. 11, 12 “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.”

Paul felt compelled to many times verify and certify his calling.

  • 2 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God…
  • Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God…
  • Colossians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God…
  • 1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God…
  • 1 Timothy 2:7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;)
  1. The Danger of a Perverted Message – vs. 7 “…but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.”

Satan’s specialty is perversion.

Pervert: to turn around, turn around

Satan’s desire is simply to take what God said and make it say the OPPOSITE.

Many times, he will camouflage it with enough resemblance to the truth to make it believable.

Note Paul’s warning to the church at Corinth:

  • II Cor. 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.  For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

We need to understand: Jesus came to give life; Satan came to steal, to kill and destroy.

Once people get a grasp of God’s agenda, and Satan’s agenda, it makes sense that Satan would pervert the truth.

  • A perverted gospel has no light

2 Corinthians 4:4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

  • A perverted gospel has no life

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

  • A perverted gospel has no liberating power

John 8:32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

  1. The Danger of Pretend Messengers – vs. 8-9 “…If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received…”

Ever since the Old Testament, there have been false prophets.

  • Jeremiah 23:21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
  • Jeremiah 27:15 For I have not sent them, saith the LORD, yet they prophesy a lie in my name;

One of the greatest dangers today are those that profess to be called of God; sent by God to preach, and aren’t.

  • Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
  • Matthew 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

God issued strong warnings about false prophets.

  • 1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

III. The Danger of Personal Motives – vs. 10-12 “…do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”

You have to ask yourself; why would a preacher, a teacher, a prophet stand before people and tell a lie?

Why would people take the message of the Gospel and pervert it?

They have a personal agenda that is not of God; pleasing God is not their priority.

They are more interested in making disciples of themselves than in making disciples of Christ.

The motive of personal disciples

  • Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

The motive of financial gain

  • Isaiah 56:10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.  Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.

Conclusion: Let’s make sure we are doing all we can to counteract the fake news that is being spread all around the country today, by spreading the truth. Keep soulwinning; keep passing out tracts; keep preaching the truth; stay in your Bible and study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth.
