The Blessing of Knowing

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Intro: The assurance of one’s salvation is one of the most wonderful things a person could experience.

A person that struggles with doubting their salvation knows the torment that comes with that.

One of Satan’s most effective tools against the believer is creating doubt.

The Bible is filled with references to the fact that we can KNOW we have eternal life.

This passage is one of my favorite for several reasons:

               A. The Person of Salvation – believe on the name of the Son of God

  • Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

               B. The Possession of Salvation – that ye have eternal life

  • John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
  • John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
  • John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

               C. The Promise of Salvation – that ye may KNOW

Hebrews 6

  • 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath:
  • 18 That by two immutable things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
  • 19 Which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

John the Beloved wrote the book of First John with the intent and purpose of providing assurance of salvation to the believer.

We can KNOW that we are saved because of:

I. The Confirmation of the Savior

  • Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
  • John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
  • John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
  • John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
  • John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
  • Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
  • Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

II. The Conditions of the Scriptures

  • Romans 10:9-11 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
  • Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Who then can be saved? Who does this apply to? Who can claim these conditions?

All the ends of the Earth can be saved.

  • Isaiah 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else.

Even to the uttermost can be saved

  • Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

All men can be saved

  • 1 Timothy 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
  • 1 Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

All can be saved

  • 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

III. The Companionship of the Spirit

II Corinthians 1

  • 21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, [is] God;
  • 22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

EARNEST: money which in purchases is given as a pledge or downpayment that the full amount will subsequently be paid

Romans 8

  • 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
  • 10 And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness.
  • 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
  • 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
  • 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
