Prayer Will Not Work

We will hear a lot of preaching and teaching on the subject of prayer these next few days.

But I want to kick off this Prayer Conference with a simple yet profound statement. Prayer Will Not Work

Prayer will not work when you pray…

I. Doubtful in your Supplication

  • James 1:6, 7 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Faith that is a “Nothing Wavering” faith is a faith that has no reservations – no doubts.

  • Prayers without faith is like a car with no engine.
  • Prayers without faith is like a stove with no heat.
  • Prayers without faith is like a printer without paper.
  • Prayers without faith is like a cordless drill with no battery.

It simply will not work.

Faith is what makes prayer work.

  • Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

The heathen pray to dead or false gods that cannot and have more faith than many who pray to a God that can.

QUESTION: Which is worse: praying to false gods and idols believing that they can answer your prayers, or praying to a God that can hear and can answer, and to pray NOT BELIEVING.

NOTE: Your prayers are just as futile praying to a God that can as the heathen’s prayers are to a god that can’t IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE YOUR GOD CAN!!

Prayer will not work when you pray…

II. Dishonoring your Spouse

  • 1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

You can dishonor your spouse by:

  • How you think about her.
  • How your talk to her.

JOKE: Before you criticize your wife, walk a mile in her shoes. That way, when you do criticize her, you’re a mile away and she’s barefooted.

  • How you treat her.
  • How you think about, talk to or treat other women that are not your wife.

Prayer will not work when you pray…

III. Defiled by your Sin

  • Isaiah 59:1, 2 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
  • Psalms 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

The Old Testament Tabernacle had a Brazen Laver that was situation just outside the Holy Place.

Before prayers could be offered up on the Table of Incense, there had to be a sanctification process.

ILLUSTRATION: Before we put a fresh coat of paint on this church, we spent several weeks cleaning. We had to spray Clorox on the walls to kill the mildew. We had to pressure wash the years of dirt, pollen, tree sap, dust, cobwebs and dead insects off before we could put on a fresh coat of paint.

This morning, before we allow God to challenge our hearts in the area of prayer, we might need a good Holy Ghost pressure washing to clean away all the muck and grime and dirt of the world!

There are things in our hearts and in our minds that we do not even know about.

Either we knew and forgot them, or we don’t even know we did them.

  • Psalm 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

PRESUMPTUOUS: to sin without even thinking about it or realizing you’re doing it; prideful arrogance
