It’s Time for a Touch

Genesis 32:25

Intro: In this chapter, God manifested himself to Jacob in an unprecedented way. Jacob’s response to the event is found in verse 30 when he said, “I have seen God face to face.”

If there was ever a time when someone needed a touch from God, it was Jacob.

Notice the events in his life that led up to this life-changing event.

You may be able to identify with Jacob this morning, and confess that it is time for a touch from God in your own life.

It’s Time for a Touch When…

I. Your Fears Control You – 32:7, 11

  • 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed…
  • 11 Deliver me…For I fear him…

No less than two times, Jacob admitted being afraid.

Fear is a torment.

  • 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

At least the first 23 verses of chapter 32 was Jacob’s reaction to fear.

Satan will inflict fear on people in a variety of ways.

Bottom line – if you are full of fear, you are a victim of Satan’s attack.

God does not fill the hearts and minds of His people with fear.

  • 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

No less than 365 times, God’s word commands us to FEAR NOT.

II. Your Failures Confront You – 32:6, 7, 11

For years, Jacob had lived with the knowledge of his past failures.

His character flaws and foolish choices had eaten him up on the inside.

He was about to be confronted with the aftermath of his actions.

III. Your Finances Concern You – 32:7, 8

Jacob was fearful of losing everything he had.

He had worked hard for his herds.

He had watched God work miraculously to provide for him.
In Genesis 30, God supernaturally multiplied Jacob’s flocks.

He was so blessed, that even those around him was blessed.

  • Genesis 30:27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.

Job had the right attitude about his wealth.

  • The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord!

IV. Your Family Condemns You – 32:11

One of the most distracting and demoralizing tools of Satan in the life of a believer is their family.

  • Matthew 10:36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

Jacob’s fear was not being accepted. see Gen. 32:20

It’s Time for a Touch When…

V. Your Fight Confines You – 32:24-26

Wrestling is a very specific type of warfare.

It involves a binding.

It consist of holds

It results in limited movement.

In verse 25, Jacob was touched in a supernatural way.

That Touch from God was:

  • Personal – vs. 25
  • Powerful – vs. 31
  • Permanent – vs. 32

Conclusion: After Jacob received a touch from God, notice the change:

  1. His Fear no longer Controlled him – vs. 30 …my life is preserved.
  2. His Failure no longer Confronted him – vs. 28 …thou hast prevailed.
  3. His Finances no longer Concerned him – 33:8, 9 …I have enough…keep that thou hast…
  4. His Family no longer Condemned him – 33:4, 5 …Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him…
  5. His Fight no longer Confined Him – 32:28 …thou hast power with God and with men…

Notice how the story ends: Genesis 33:20 Jacob built an altar, and called it:

  • El-elohe-Israel= “the mighty God of Israel”

A touch from God will renew your perspective of who God really is.
