I Am A Christian Series – Part 3

The Demands of Christianity

Luke 12:48b For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Intro:

  1. He gave us His Son
  • John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

We did not deserve Someone as priceless as the Son of God.

We were ungodly, unwanted and unworthy, but God gave us his only begotten Son.

  1. He gave us His Salvation – Eph. 2:8, 9
  • Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:.

Salvation is free. The demands that God had for the salvation of man was met in the person and by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  Isaiah said, “…he shall see the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied.”

I am grateful that the demands of a thrice holy God was met; not just once, but once and for all!

Because of Jesus Christ, we have access to eternal life; a free gift; paid for and available to every person.

  1. He gave us His Spirit
  • 1 John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
  1. He gave His Scripture
  • Psalms 68:11 The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.

There are several demands placed upon the Christian.

We have been given much. Therefore, much has been required of us.

Here are just a few things that God expects of those that call themselves Christians:

I. A Life of Fulfillment

  • Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

NOTICE the CONTEXT:

  • vs. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
  • vs. 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
  • vs. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

God hath before ordained that we should walk a life of good works.

It was not a suggestion; it was not an idea, it was not something He just tossed out for us to consider.

God ordained that every child of God should live a life of fulfilling His Divine plan; a life of good works.

The question is: are we fulfilling our God-given purpose?

As believers, do we understand the difference in NOT OF WORKS, and CREATED UNTO GOOD WORKS?

Turn to James 2:14-26

  • 14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
  • 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
  • 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
  • 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
  • 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
  • 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
  • 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
  • 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
  • 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
  • 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
  • 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
  • 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
  • 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

A life of good works should not be the exception; it is God’s expectation.

QUESTION: What good works did you do last week?

JOKE: Little Boy Scout that showed up for his Friday night scout meeting all bruised and scratched. The scoutmaster asked him what happened. He said it happened to him doing his good deed for the week. The scoutmaster asked him what he did. The boy said he got hurt helping a little old lady cross the road. The scoutmaster asked him what caused all the bruises and scratches. The little Boy Scout said, “Well, she didn’t want to go!”

God is not at all interested in my and your good works when it comes to salvation; but He ordained us to live a life of good works as a Christian.

Are you living a life, fulfilling God’s plan and purpose??

II. A Life of Faithfulness

  • 1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

FOUND: to come upon, hit upon, to meet with; after searching, to find a thing sought

  • Proverbs 20:6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
  • Proverbs 25:19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint

FAITHFUL: trusty, faithful; of persons who show themselves faithful in the transaction of business, the execution of commands, or the discharge of official duties; one who kept his plighted faith, worthy of trust; that can be relied on

  • 2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
  • Matthew 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant:

III. A Life of Fruitfulness

  • John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Matthew 21:18, 19

  • 18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
  • 19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
  • Colossians 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
