Continue In Faith

Acts 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

This list of “things” that Paul had admonished Timothy to continue in included the word “faith”.

  • 2 Timothy 3:10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

Paul’s testimony:

  • 2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

NOTE: the meaning of the word “kept” here: to attend to carefully, take care of; to guard; one in the state in which he is

ILLUSTRATION: Friday afternoon was the funeral service of Dr. Bobby Roberson, pastor of the Gospel Light Baptist Church for nearly 62 years.  Saved at 17 years of age, and called to preach at 19, he continued in the faith until his death at age 86. Many of the preachers that preached the funeral begged Gospel Light Baptist Church to CONTINUE!

There are 26 references to the word “faith” just in First and Second Timothy.

Just from First and Second Timothy alone, we learn that a person can have two totally different relationships with FAITH.

I have broken down some of Paul’s mentions of the word “faith” into two categories:

I. Paul’s Condemnations concerning the Faith

YOU CAN DEPART FROM THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

YOU CAN DENY THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

YOU CAN CAST OFF THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 5:12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

YOU CAN ERR FROM THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
  • 1 Timothy 6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

YOU CAN OVERTHROW THE FAITH OF SOME

  • 2 Timothy 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

YOU CAN BE REPROBATE CONCERNING THE FAITH

  • 2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

II. Paul’s Commendations concerning the Faith

YOU CAN HAVE SONS IN THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

YOU CAN HAVE FAITH UNFEIGNED

  • 1 Timothy 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
  • 2 Timothy 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

YOU CAN HOLD TO THE FAITH or PUT AWAY FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck;

YOU CAN HOLD THE MYSTERY OF THE FAITH IN A PURE CONSCIENCE

  • 1 Timothy 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

YOU CAN HAVE GREAT BOLDNESS IN THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 3:13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

YOU CAN BE NOURISHED UP IN THE FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 4:6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

YOU CAN BE AN EXAMPLE OF THE BELIEVER IN FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

YOU CAN FOLLOW AFTER FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
  • 2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

YOU CAN FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH

  • 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

YOU CAN HOLD FAST IN FAITH

  • 2 Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

YOU CAN KEEP THE FAITH

  • 2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

Conclusion: Notice Paul’s admonition in Colossians 1:22

  • Colossians 1:22, 23 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: IF YE CONTINUE IN THE FAITH grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
